Fireworks Tasmania
Plenty of production companies can hang a light. Very few in Tasmania are licensed to put fire in the sky. Fireworks are our core craft.
MaxFX designs and fires fireworks displays across Tasmania for local councils, festivals, sporting clubs, corporates, venues and private clients. Every show is built around your site: we work out what is actually possible given your fallout zones, neighbours, livestock, airspace and audience position, then design the biggest, tightest show that fits inside those limits.
Our pyrotechnics work covers both ends of the scale — large outdoor aerial shells at distance, and close-proximity indoor pyro fired metres from performers and cameras. Because we also own the lighting, laser and audio systems, fireworks can be cued alongside every other element of your show from one timecode source.
What we fire
Shells, comets, mines, crossettes and multi-shot cakes fired from ground positions, barges or rooftops. Scaled from three minutes to a full festival finale.
Outdoor · Public events
Your soundtrack becomes the script. Every cue is programmed against timecode so accents, drops and the final beat land exactly on the burst.
Signature MaxFX
Indoor-rated gerbs, mines, comets and waterfalls for theatres, arenas and televised productions where the audience is metres from the effect.
Indoor · Concert · Theatre
Midnight-accurate countdown sequences with radio, PA and broadcast sync, plus early family-friendly displays for the 9:30pm crowd.

How timecoding works
We import your soundtrack, mark the accents, then place each firework against the waveform with its own lift and burst delay compensated. The show is fired from a wireless firing system slaved to timecode, so the sequence is identical every time it runs.
Wireless firing with full continuity testing
SMPTE timecode or internal show clock
DMX links to lighting, lasers and flames
Per-cue burst-delay compensation
Redundant power and backup panel
Workshop rehearsal before show day
Process
Six steps, all documented. You always know what happens next and who is responsible.
We talk through your date, venue, audience size and budget, then assess firing positions, fallout zones and access — on site or from aerials and plans.
You get a written proposal: effect list, duration, sequencing concept, compliance requirements and a fixed price. No surprise extras later.
We lodge the regulatory paperwork and liaise with council, venue, police, fire service, airspace and neighbours as your event requires.
Your show file is built and tested against the soundtrack, with timecode and DMX handshakes proven before we ever load a mortar.
Rig, wire, test, brief the exclusion zone and fire. Licensed operators on the panel and a second pair of eyes on the crowd line, always.
Post-show inspection, misfire management, debris sweep and a clean site handover — documented and signed off.
Safety & compliance
Every MaxFX display is fired by licensed operators under a documented risk assessment, with public liability insurance, calculated exclusion zones, a make-safe procedure and a post-show inspection. We liaise with venues, councils and emergency services, and we will tell you plainly when an idea cannot be done safely on your site — along with the version that can.
Licensed pyrotechnicians and licensed electrical contractor in-house
Public liability insurance and certificates of currency on request
Site-specific risk assessments and safety data sheets
Council, venue, police and fire service liaison
Livestock, wildlife and neighbour notification planning
Weather monitoring with documented go / no-go criteria
FAQ
Do I need a permit for a fireworks display in Tasmania?
Professional displays require a licensed pyrotechnician plus notifications and approvals that vary by site, distance to buildings, livestock and airspace. MaxFX holds the licences and prepares the documentation, notifications and risk assessments as part of your booking — you do not lodge anything yourself.
How long should a fireworks display run?
Most crowd-pleasing displays run five to eight minutes. Short and dense beats long and thin: a tight six-minute timecoded show almost always feels bigger than a loose twelve-minute one. For festivals we often split the budget across an opener and a finale instead.
What happens if it rains?
Rain is rarely a problem — fireworks are weatherproofed and we fire in light rain routinely. Wind direction and strength are the real limits, because fallout zones move. We monitor forecasts, adjust firing positions where we can, and agree a postponement plan with you in advance.
How far do fireworks need to be from the audience?
It depends on the largest shell size and the effect type. Bigger aerial shells need substantially larger clearances than close-proximity stage pyro. We calculate exclusion zones for your specific effect list and confirm your site can hold them before quoting.
Can you fire fireworks over water?
Yes. Barge, pontoon and jetty positions are common in Tasmania for waterfront and harbour displays, and water reflection makes a modest budget look considerably larger.
